dreaming about a garden

My dear friend Shannon wrote about her garden planning this week, and got me dreaming.

If I were in Buffalo I would be planning my own garden, such as it ever was—a few tomato plants and green peppers and maybe salad greens and pickling cucumbers. My garden was always, at best, an amateur effort, but it got a little better every year.

I hoped that when we moved here we would rent a home with a large enough yard and an agreeable enough landlord to have a small garden; we got both the yard space and the agreeable landlord, but we didn’t get the timing right. We signed a six-month lease in October; the house will be listed for sale again in April. We could well be here through the summer, if the house doesn’t sell quickly; on the other hand, we could be told in the middle of the summer that we have to be out in a month.

So it looks like my best—or only, really—option this year is going to be a container garden; something we can take with us if we have to move again.

I’ve never done a container garden. I went to a workshop on container gardening a few years ago, and from what I remember I think it’s pretty easy—you need big enough containers, good enough soil, and decent drainage. More or less the same as a regular garden, except the part about containers.

So, first up on the agenda: Find some resources on container gardening. I’ll be hitting the library tonight, I think. (And I’m open to suggestions as well…)
