enjoy the silence

Wednesday, 5:21 am

I love being awake while the rest of my family is still sleeping, when the house is almost completely still.

It’s not the easiest time to be awake—I am, by nature, a night owl—but it is the most productive part of my day. I might strip the varnish off a section of a table, or begin (or finish) making a gift, or begin (or finish) writing a blog entry. I might catch up on my e-mail, or write thank-you notes. Today, I have a soaker to finish. (In spite of my soaker fatigue, there is still wool left in my soaker stash, so yes—I’m still making soakers.)

I get my best thinking done in the early hours—perhaps outlining a story in my mind, to be fleshed out later when I have time to sit and write; more often just reviewing what I need to do this week and working out a plan to get it all done. Whatever I do, whatever I think about—the profound or the mundane—it is a meditative experience, a slow, gentle awakening into the day.

Later will come the noise and bustle of the day, with all its demands on my time and my attention—but this fleeting hour before the sun rises is mine and mine alone.

Ha! You’re a better person than I am. I am dead at that time of day, not able to wake up to save my life. It always makes me feel guilty, like I should try harder because those early hours would be perfect for getting things done. But I’d honestly rather stay up to 2-3 in the morning getting things done than get up early, lol.

I know what you mean—my instinct is to stay in bed as long as possible. 🙂 But for some reason I find when I stay up late to get things done I don’t seem to get as much accomplished as when I get up early; probably because I’m so tired by that late. So up early it is, for me. 🙂

I need morningtime like I need breath. Usually it’s two hours or more…. and it’s essential for me, so I totally understand. 🙂

I am jealous of your two hours! I have to sneak out of bed without waking Julia to get even an hour…if I’m lucky. And sometimes she wakes up when I get up & then the whole thing is shot anyway. 🙂
