project:simplify • week one (in absentia)

Monday, 7 March 2011

Right on schedule, Simple Mom has announced the first hot spot for Project:Simplify. And I’m really excited about it—my closet and drawers are just ridiculous. I’m not sure how it happened—OK, it might be the result of years of haunting thrift shops and very rarely getting rid of anything—but the clutter is out of control and has a tendency to spill out into the rest of the room, making me want to just close the door and forget we even have a bedroom.

Except, you know…I’m 150 miles away from my closet right now, and will be until very late Thursday night. So this week’s project is going to be a little more difficult.

So here’s my plan: Today, and for the rest of the week, I’m going to think about things I know I can cull from my wardrobe, and come up with some sort of criteria for deciding what to keep and what to give away. I’m also going to read the relevant chapter in Tsh’s book (which I started reading ages ago & got about halfway through before getting completely sidetracked) so I can internalize some of her ideas before I actually get into the thick of things.

Friday morning I will take and post my “before” pictures, and then I’ll get to work. If I finish Friday (hahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!), I’ll post my “after” pictures then as well & I’ll also post to Friday’s link-up post. And if not…I’ll keep going on Saturday and/or Sunday until I’m done. We’re supposed to take the weekend after each hot spot to sit back & relax and admire our efforts before beginning the next task on Monday, but this weekend it looks like there’s no rest for the wicked…

Is her book good? I was looking for an organization book, but I get annoyed with them fast (I can only be so anal retentive!)

This one will actually be hard for me. Ace still has t-shirts from HIGH SCHOOL, and we argue about them every time I do this. Sigh.

I like what I’ve read so far. I’m actually not as far through it as I thought I was—I’m only in chapter 6. Heh. But she has a lot of good ideas & it’s a pretty easy read.

We have the opposite problem—George has T-shirts he’s had forever, but we took most of those & set them aside in a box in the attic a year or so ago; most of them he hasn’t worn in years, but he couldn’t bear to get rid of them. I might do up one of those T-shirt quilts for him if I ever have free time again. But anyway—*he’s* the one who complains about my having too much crap I never wear in the closet! He has this thing where when he buys something new he gets rid of something old and I…well, I don’t. So this purging really ought to make a huge difference…

hahaha, yeah I have that problem too. I have like 5 Sabres girl cut shirts that fit, but not the way I like them to fit, but I can’t handle getting rid of them. I keep telling myself that I’ll fit them eventually…

Maybe I’ll check out the book. I was doing the Fly Lady thing for awhile but by day 2 I was banging my head against a wall yelling that I couldn’t like that. It was just too much.
