One year ago, Papa and I finally felt like we were getting the hang of this “being parents” thing. We were comfortable. Our life was full, and busy. Our little family was—we thought—complete.

Then the phone rang.

“Julia’s baby brother was born yesterday; D wants to know if you will adopt him.”

Do we want to adopt him? Oh, yes…

And then, a flurry of phone calls and discussions about logistics and practicalities. Could we afford the fees? Could we live on one income indefinitely? Could we handle two small kids? It couldn’t possibly be that much harder than one, right?

Oh, hell—I just gave away all our baby things…

Your very wise aunt Caitlin told me: “I think I know what you will decide. And I think, if you decide the way I think you will, that you’ll come to know it’s the right decision; if you go the other way I think you will always wonder whether you made the right decision.”

Of course we decided the way she thought we would. Our hearts said yes as soon as we knew you’d been born, as soon as we knew your Mama D wanted us to be your parents; everything else would fall into place, as it always does.

And so here we are, a year later, and you are turning one. The answers to those questions were: Yes, yes, yes, and ohmygodyes. We made the right decision; everything else fell into place, as it always does. It has been a crazy year—an unforgettable year—and I can’t remember what life was like before you, or imagine it without you.

Happy birthday, Little Mister Man. I love you.

Happy birthday to Gabi! I didn’t realize her birthday was so close to Asher’s. And for some reason I thought she was closer in age to A than to Julia, but she really is almost as old as J, isn’t she? I hope she has a lovely day! xoxo
