messy fun today :: surgery tomorrow

Tuesday, 25 January 2011

Julia spent the morning playing with corn starch and water and food colouring.

Unfortunately I put my camera away before she started “shampooing” her hair with corn starch. (I need to find a place to keep it so it is handy when I want to snap a picture, but out of the kids’ reach…)

Her surgery is scheduled for tomorrow; we’re hoping the predicted weather (Snowmageddon II, apparently) doesn’t interfere.

Julia is looking forward to it. I’ve been talking to her about what will happen at the hospital for the last few days. She has the whole thing memorized, complete with pantomime. First, she is going to give a high five. (Last time we were at the hospital, she got to play with the mascots for the Whale; I’ve told her they’re probably not going to be there tomorrow, but she is apparently determined to high-five someone.) Then the doctors will give her medicine (points to her mouth; I haven’t bothered to correct this misperception because she doesn’t like needles) that will make her sleepy (rests her head to the side & closes her eyes), and then Dr. Kim will go through her belly button (points to her belly button) and fix her bladder. After she wakes up, she’ll go to her room where Mama will stay overnight with her for a Girls’ Night Slumber Party.

I’ve been trying to make it sound like fun to her—after all, the icky parts will happen while she’s asleep, so she doesn’t have to know it’s anything but fun, right?—but I’m anxious. I know it’s a minor surgery—we chose the “minimally invasive” option for a reason—but still, it’s surgery. And she’s so small…

We’ll be sending lots of positive thoughts Julia’s way tomorrow!

And I need to let Liam play with the cornstarch- they do that at Lilia’s preschool.

      Thanks, Shannon. 🙂

You should totally do the corn starch thing with Liam. He’ll have a blast. Julia is fascinated by how it sometimes is hard/solid and sometimes is drippy/liquid. (OK, I’m still fascinated by that, too…)

Hugs Mama!!! I’ll be thinking of you and Julia tomorrow, and wish I’d be around to give her a high five. 🙂
