Yesterday started out promisingly enough. Dinner was marinating in the fridge. I’d written a post for this blog and was halfway finished with one for my blog at Adoption Blogs. I’d managed to get both kids bathed. I even thought I might actually get a shower myself before noon.

And then the attorney called. The attorney is representing our credit union in refinancing our house, and she was calling to let me know that they were ready to schedule our closing—but the title search had unearthed a problem.

Worth noting here is that we don’t have an attorney representing us in the refinance because, well, who the hell needs an attorney for a refinance? We already own the house; it’s supposed to be pretty straightforward. Except for one thing: The refinance, of course, also involves our current mortgage company, Ginormous Multinational Banking Conglomerate (which shall remain nameless here until our mortgage is out of its clutches and safely ensconced in the loving hands of our CU). And where GMBC is involved, nothing is ever straightforward.

The attorney told me that the title search revealed three liens on our home by GMBC, rather than the two—a first mortgage and a HELOC—that are actually held by GMBC.

It seems that many moons ago—way back in 2003—when we traded up our tiny home equity loan (which we’d taken out as soon as we bought the house to make some immediately necessary repairs) to a home equity line of credit (which we figured was more useful for fixing up a fixer-upper, since as we paid it off we would have more money to use on the next project), paying off the balance of the loan with part of the line of credit—GBMC never discharged the lien.

And the thing is, this should be a simple fix. And if we weren’t already fed up to here with GMBC, it wouldn’t even be terribly annoying.

But here’s what is annoying: When I called GMBC to get the ball rolling on discharging the lien—you know, so we can close on our refinance before our rate lock expires so we don’t lose the rate-lock fee—the customer service agent looked up my file—and told me that GMBC has no record of this loan.

“Do you have a loan number?” he asked me.

“No. We paid this loan off eight years ago. No one is anal enough to keep records for that long.”

So he told me if I faxed the title report someone could look into it . . . and get back to me. And history tells me that this is unlikely; we’re still waiting for a return call—within 24 hours—we were promised two weeks ago regarding another issue. So clearly I’m going to have to follow up—likely daily—and hope that even though they have all the incentive in the world not to resolve this issue (after all, when we refinance, they’re losing my mortgage), by some miracle I eventually end up talking to someone who actually wants to help me.

On the bright side, it turns out I am anal enough to keep records for that long—the loan number that is supposed to magically make the original loan appear in GMBC’s records turned up in a dusty file cabinet in the attic. So hopefully that will speed the process up a smidge. I decided to fax it tomorrow, instead of calling again. I’m documenting everything in writing. And so help me, if they try to screw with me on this, they’re going to wish they hadn’t.

Today has to be a better day, right?

    8 years! UURRGG…. GMBC had better pay attention (is it wrong of me to sorta wish they’ll be doofus’ about it and get you really mad?)

      Wrong? Nah… I’m kind of hankering for a fight with them. Which means they’ll probably resolve it with no problem, which would be a little anticlimactic but nevertheless a good thing. The sooner I get my mortgage away from them, the less stressed I’ll be. I’m not used to having all this negativity in my life. 🙂
